As well as the House, Traquair also has extensive grounds to explore which include the maze that is planted with 1,500 trees! and the play ground of willow tunnels. Why not take lunch in the old walled garden at the 1745 Cottage Restaurant then have a wander through the woodland walk which boasts some of the oldest yew trees in Scotland or take a tour around one of the oldest working breweries in Britain dating back to the eighteenth century where all the delicious Traquair House Ales are available to sample and purchase. Also set in Traquair grounds are several independent craft shops, the Traquair gift shop and the Traquair brewery shop for you to pick a souvenir or two.
Traquair House
Brewery was founded in 1965 by Peter Maxwell Stuart, 20th Laird of
Traquair and has been managed by his daughter Catherine Maxwell
Stuart since 1990. The brewery currently produces around 600-700
barrels per annum and in 1997, the brewery was formed into a
limited company.

"You don't get many chances to stay in a
900 year old castle, so when I spotted Traquair, I knew we had to
go there for a weekend break. We took our kids, aged 4 and 8, and
booked a room in the old house for us to share. We arrived at
night, and the kids were suitably impressed by the huge looming
white building, with its turrets and courtyards. Up an ancient
stone spiral staircase, and our room was large and welcoming, with
a large bathroom across our private hall and what proved to be a
fabulous view of the maze in the garden out of our windows. The
next morning we headed downstairs to the breakfast room, where we
were treated to a delicious traditional Scottish breakfast. We
spent the day with the kids out in the grounds, they loved the maze
and the woodland walk and playing by the river. In the evening we
drove to Edinburgh, which didn't take long at all. Traquair is
an incredible place to be able to stay. Definitely worth the luxury
hotel (rather than B&B) prices."
General Information: Welcome to Traquair Castle, a truly unique piece of living history welcoming visitors from all over the world ... originally owned by the Kings of Scotland. It later became the home of the Earls of Traquair and is still lived in by the descendants of the Maxwell Stuart family. It is now well known as the oldest inhabited and most romantic house in Scotland. Part of the house is open to the public during the summer months.
Honeymoon Couples are particularly welcome for overnight stays, and receive a complimentary bottle of Traquair's own French sparkling wine. You are welcome to stay at Traquair House.

"Traquair House Ale is a dark, strong Scots classic which, despite coming from a tiny 18th-century brew house, has been hugely influential in export markets, particularly in the USA, where all beer buffs seem to know it. Serious alcohol and fruity malt on the nose, and delicious plum pie and vanilla flavours, with a little oak and amontillado sherry character. Soft and drinkable with a sherry-ish dryness that stops it cloying, and a sweet note reminiscent of the sticky skins of supermarket dates in a box. Excellent with hard farm cheeses, particularly those with an acidic or goaty accent. also unrivalled as a Christmas Eve sipping beer, with candles and log fires and a glittery tree."
"A manor house (or castle?) in which Bonnie Prince Charlie once took refuge, near Peebles, in the Borders. Like any other large residence, it had its own brewery, enterprisingly put back into operation by the Laird (lord of the manor) in 1965. At his death in 1990, his daughter Catherine, then in her mid- twenties, took over, supervising the running of the place, and has since expanded the Brewhouse. Uncoated wooden fermenters are used, and Traquair House Ale**** has a touch of oaky earthiness to balance its dark-malt nuttiness- (18.5-21; 1074-82; a little over 5.6; 7.0). Special editions have-been produced at various gravities, and there is a Bear Ale ** to *** of a more conventional strength (12.5; 1050; 4.0; 5.0). The house can be visited, and they hold an annual beer festival at the end of May."
