Activities/Attractions: In the historic town of Santa Comba Dão, the visitor can admire religiously conserved treasures of a passed more or less distant. Though with forms and stiles of different ages and times, it has the Baroque as its most marking period. From this natural belvedere there are several beautiful views, which turn this tranquil town into a place well worth exploring. The Bairro Alto (high quarter), with its curving alleys, its charming traditional patios and its streets with suggestive names, has a mediaeval atmosphere.

Although the Quinta is quiet, it is by no means isolated. There are excellent connections with Lisbon, Oporto and Spain and it is well located for visiting some of the most interesting places of Central Portugal, such as the magnificent mountains of the Serra da Estrela and the Serra do Caramulo, the national park of Bussaco, the old university city of Coimbra and the city of Viseu. The vine-yards of the famous Dão wine are nearby.

One of the best ways to explore the Dão region is making a bicycle tour. We have set out some very interesting tours, which show you the beautiful little villages, the wine yards and the landscapes between the three rivers which meet each other in the Aguieira-lake, the rivers Mondego, Dão and Criz. General Information: Welcome to Quinta do Rio Dão ... a lovely lakeside family hotel and rustic cottages in the mountain region of Portugal, offering you the choice of a room, a cottage, an apartment, bed and breakfast or self catering ... with free use of canoes. Quinta do Rio Dão is part of a small village, located 2 km from the historical city of Santa Comba Dão. Quinta do Rio Dão has four lovely restored farm houses available for guests, all with beautiful views in a very nice and quiet environment.

Two of the cottages are officially classified as "Agro-Turismo" and the other two as "Casas de Campo". Agro-Turismo is tourism in an agriculture environment, within a rural setting and atmosphere, with the main houses encompassing architectural styles from the classic to the rustic. Casas de Campo are cottages available for guests, located in the countryside and distinguished by their type of construction, being of simple architectural style and utilising regional materials. Generally of smaller dimensions, they contain simple and practical, but comfortable furnishings.

• Casa das Mimosas - A little further up the hill ... 80 m from the river, which affords a splendid view of Quinta do Rio Dão, the river and the old town of Santa Comba Dão
  
• Casa da Abelenda - A superb location for those who enjoy peace and quiet away from other people. It's a five minute walk (or drive) away from Quinta do Rio Dão and all its facilities. The cottage stands within 5 ha. of land with various species of trees, facing the view of a lovely valley with a small stream. There are no other houses to see
  
• Casa Principal - The reception, and you will be welcomed by the owners, Pieter and Juliette Gruppelaar-Spierings. There is a large "sala" (living room), with a library (Portuguese, English and Dutch books). Here you can also find some information maps of the Quinta and the surroundings
  
• Casa Anexo - A rustic stone built farmhouse, dating from the 18th century and is situated at the waterfront. The oldest part has 90 cm thick granite walls. The cottage is surrounded by greenery and is situated at only 20 meters from the river, when the water level is at its highest
  

The Quinta measures about 3 hectares and has several terraces, most of them bordered with vine-tendrils. There is a vegetable garden and there are many fruit trees. There is also a small vineyard on the Quinta and nearer to the river there are some very old cork oaks. The agriculture at Quinta do Rio Dão is officially classified as biological. All products produced on the Quinta are 100% biological.
